History of Barbershop Harmony Society
|
Where we are now...
|
The Barbershop Harmony Society, legally and historically named the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA), is the first of several organizations to promote and preserve barbershop music as an art form. Founded by Owen C. Cash in 1938, the organization quickly grew, promoting barbershop harmony among men of all ages. As of 2012, just under 25,000 men in the United States and Canada are members of this organization whose focus is on a cappella music. The international headquarters was in Kenosha, Wisconsin for fifty years before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2007.

The main purpose of Kaskaskia Trail Chorus is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at our annual show, a number of community events, churches, anniversaries, etc. We may be available to sing at your next function or event.

Kaskaskia Trail Chorus Background
The Kaskaskia Trail Chorus has provided cheer through song for more than 57 years. The chorus actually formed in 1963, affiliating with the Barbershop Harmony Society of Nashville, Tenn. in 1965. This year marks the 57rd year of membership in the society. When the Kaskaskia Trail Chorus first started, members gathered in Homer Hergenroeder’s bar in Waterloo to rehearse. Today, the chorus rehearses every Thursday night at the Capitol Theater in Waterloo. The Kaskaskia Trail Chorus is made up of 21 men ranging in age from 45 to 94. Two charter members are still official members of the chorus. Other than the annual concert, the Kaskaskia Trail Chorus performs across the region at Memorial Day events, the Monroe County Fair, local churches and many other functions. The chorus presents its annual show this year on November 9, 2024. It will once again be held at Turner Hall in Columbia, IL. Ticket prices for adults are $15.00 and $7.00 for children 12 and under. The seating as always is Cabaret Style Seating. The New Fangled Four will be the Featured Quartet. More details will be posted in the future. |
